Attack of the Bat!

I live in an old, Victorian house and sometimes late at night we get visited by a bat. It hasn't happened in at least a year, but somehow at around 4 a.m. this morning I was awakened by the familiar fluttering noises...a bat!
Almost nothing is more scary to me than a bat flying around my bedroom (or any part of the house, for that matter.) Something about the way they fly, it just seems so erratic even though they must know where they are going, it looks as though they are going to head in one direction, then they are all of a sudden in your face. Aaaagh! Plus, bats carry rabies in our area, so it's doubly frightening.
I immediately called out the troops (my husband.) Amazingly, he woke up out of a sound sleep when I said, "There is a bat in the room!"
He went to get bat-hunting equipment while I cowered under the covers (yes, I'm that scared of bats!) He shut the door to our son's room so that the bat couldn't go in there.
Meanwhile, my cat was chasing the bat around the bedroom. This is a cat that was near death from kidney failure last week! He's fifteen years old and he was in such bad shape that I had taken him to the vets one last time expecting to have him put to sleep as I couldn't get him to eat and he was emaciated. We had decided at the vets to give him another try to see if we could perk up his appetite. I give him fluids once a day (down from twice a day) and feed him a special diet. Well, it must have worked because Bono-cat caught that bat in mid-flight. He had it down on the floor when Brian returned with the bat-gear.
"It's about time that cat earned his keep!" was Brian's remark.
I checked Bono carefully for any bite wounds and couldn't find any.
Brian got the bat away from Bono and made quite sure it was dead, poor thing.
I told Bono how brave he had been. I certainly wasn't!
Bono has been vaccinated against rabies, if anyone was wondering!

Wow, what a disturbing experience! Too bad the bat had to die. But good that your kitty's still spry enough to do a little bat-hunting! Good thing no one was bitten. I've had to be vaccinated for rabies (close call from a dog-bite) and it sucks...a series of about a dozen or more shots either in the arm or stomach. Painful either way. :-(
