Brian's First Bike Race

Brian and I went to Yankee Springs this past Sunday for Brian's first mountain bike race!

Doodah was taking care of baby Derek, so it was just Brian and myself who made the trip. It was a pleasant drive, and the weather was perfect, cool and just a tad rainy. It was great weather to have to ride a mountain bike eleven miles through the woods!
I saw him go off at the start, and then went back to the Wrangler to read for an hour and a half. Then I went back to the finish line to wait. It was really neat cheering on the riders!
Brian came in eleventh in his classification, and I am very proud of him! This was his very first race, and now he has some great ideas for improving his standings in the next race.

Tribute to Rev. Mary Powell

I recently received word that Rev. Mary Powell, one of my friends and a fellow minister from my old church, has passed away. She will be missed very much.

Rev. Mary came to the ministry later in her life. She had been a wife and mother, student and diligent worker before the ministry called to her. She had a lot of life experiences to share with those she was called upon to counsel. Often, those who sought her aid at the church were some of the saddest, loneliest souls-people who were so beaten down by life that they believed in nothing but their own powerlessness to change their fate.
Rev. Mary believed in each individual's ability to change their lives for the better. And she was living proof of that! She always said, "If I can do it, YOU can do it." The two words she never wanted to hear were, "I can't!" One of the only times I have ever heard this soft-spoken woman raise her voice was to counter that statement with, "YES, you CAN!"
Rev. Mary, with her husband, Rev. Jay, taught many classes at the church on healing and counselling. They also held healing circles and meditations on a regular basis. Mary's healing presense radiated calm energy. When receiving a spiritual healing from the Powells, you just KNEW it would work.
Rev. Mary loved everyone, and respected all people, whatever spiritual beliefs they held. She was passionate about yoga, a spiritual/physical exercise program that had helped her so much in her past. She often went on yoga retreats. Although she was Christian, she was very interested in Eastern philosophy, meditation, and spiritual beliefs.
I wasn't a close friend of Mary's, though I did work with her on the church board. There were always many people from the church surrounding her who obviously needed her attention and guidance, which she lovingly gave. I regret that I could not have spent more time getting to know Rev. Mary before moving away from the church. Rev. Mary is a true loss to the spiritual community.
I extend my deepest sympathy to Rev. Jay and to the rest of their family and to the Church.

The Nance on vacation!

nance06.jpg

Here is a photo from Nancy's recent vacation to Arizona.

I really like the view in this photo. I have never been to Arizona, but I have heard that the scenery is marvelous.
The big news here is our new cable modem! I will be having fun on the internet now that it doesn't take ten hours just to view one webpage or download a photo.
