Latest News and Events

Derek gets sick in Doodah's car (twice!), I have a go at cantering Kai, and Brian and I have a hot (tub) date. Plus more!

First of all, Derek is all better, now. But for awhile, he just seemed to be throwing up a lot. Which necessitated trips to the doctor. Multiple times! Derek is so familiar with the pharmacy that he knows what is in every aisle.
First, a few weeks ago, he had a terribly ear/sinus infection. He was on meds for that...which gave him the most horrid diaper rash. It was extremely painful for him. We ended up having to get special ointment and also had to change his meds. He doesn't like taking meds, no matter how it is flavored, but we somehow managed to get it all inside him.
Then, shortly after this cleared up, he started getting sick! Doodah thought it was car sickness. He didn't seem too affected other than the vomiting, except that his appetite was less. But the vomiting kept going for several days, so he went back to the doctor again. In case it was a recurrence of the ear infection (there was still fluid in his ear), he got more meds.
Now he seems to be back to normal, fortunately!
In other news, I actually was brave enough to canter on Kai for the first time-just once around the arena, but it was a start. The trainer, Jenny, had warned me that he feels like a rocket about to take off when he just starts his first couple of strides, and his headset is very high, a result of having had no riding or training at all really for years and years. It was fun to be cantering again, but I'll admit those first couple of strides were quite frightening, he left me behind a bit and I had to catch up!
Brian and I had a hot date...literally! We went to a "one hour vacation" at a hot tub place, courtesy of my brother and his wife. (The gift certificate came from the office Christmas party gift exchange!)Brian and I were in the Oahu room. I drank a nicely-chilled orange mango beverage. Tasty!
The room was nice, it was outdoors and featured a waterfall and a couple of tiki statues. Even though the room was outdoors, it was very private and we had piped in music. It wasn't cold at all being outdoors, as long as you stayed in the tub!

Julip Cob Stallion!

Julipcobstalliondapplegrey2.jpg

I traded one of my china horses for this lovely dapple grey Julip Cob Stallion.

This trade is from my only model horse friend from the U.S. who also collects Julips. (Most Julip collectors live in the U.K. or in Europe.)The friend who traded with me is named Mel, I sent her my custom glazed Skara Brae. Skara Brae is much safer with Mel since I have a toddler running around. Thanks, Mel!
I like this cob very much, and I've named him Cadfael after one of my favorite fictional characters (from the books by Ellis Peters.)
Mel took this lovely photo before she sent Cadfael to live with me.

The Model Horse Fun Show

group.jpg

This is a group portrait of the gang at the recent Model Horse Fun Show hosted by Carrie.

That's me in the front row left, I am holding a Julip black Welsh Cob. The Julip could unfortunately not enter this show, as it was for Breyers only, but he was there as a representative of my stable.
Next to me is Carrie, the host of the show, with a Breyer Little Bit. On the other side of Carrie is the "Evil Sue" but she is definitely not evil! She aquired that nickname over the years to distinguish her from another Sue (whose nickname is the "Good Sue!")
In the back row are Tricia, Silke, another Sue (must be "Neutral Sue" I guess!), and Lisa.
Carrie's husband, Neil, kindly took this photo for us to remember the show by.
Carrie's shows are the most fun-she feeds us doughnuts and sandwiches and the classes are all fun, but the friendship is even more fun!
I am now planning a fun show for October (the first one I've held in years.) It will have a pirate theme-arrr!

New Julips Arrived.

julip3horses.jpg

Here they are! This is actually their eBay photo, they look a lot better now that their manes and tails have been brushed.

The chestnut one is a mold called the eventing horse, his name is King Crimson. The other two are a dressage horse and a Lipizzan (or possibly a much chunkier dressage horse.) Their names are Othello and Sirius.
(Yes, I give all of my Julips names based on their personalities!)

Valentine's Day

Yesterday was Valentine's Day, and I received a lovely valentine hand-made by my little Boo and some tasty cookies from Brian!

The cookies are from a special cookie store in our hometown. They are very expensive, so we buy them only very rarely. They are extremely tasty, though!
Derek's valentine was made of pink construction paper, with stickers and ribbons and rose petals all over it. Inside is a photo of Derek! It's really cute.
Doodah left a valentine and a small cake outside the back door, we found it when we arrived home after I picked Derek up at day care. It was very thoughtful of her! We called her up to thank her later in the evening.
Brian also took Derek and I out to eat at a local pub. They were having specials, so we both had prime rib. It came with dessert, too, though the desserts turned out to be from somewhere like Gordon's Food Service, and not very good.
I bought Brian a book and some miniatures at the local game store as a Valentine gift.
We were all tired so went home after dinner and rested before going to bed around 10:30.

New Julips to arrive soon!

chestnuteventer.jpg

I usually don't like to post photos until the horses have actually arrived, but here is a sneak peak at what one of the Julips in the auction I won will look like!

There were three of them in the auction listing, and I had to outbid some other bidders. But I had very high hopes of winning, as I had to lose out on the last Julip auction I found in the U.S. I didn't want to miss out on these, as well!
They should be arriving soon, and I am looking forward to seeing them in person!
The seller said that these three Julips were purchased by herself at the Beauchamp Place store in London over twenty years ago, and that the lady who sold them to her kissed each horse goodbye before packaging them up.

We have been so sick!!!

We have all had colds, flu, ear infections and/or what might be mono. We are about ready to move to Arizona!

Just kidding about Arizona. But we did think about going south to Texas or Florida for a weekend. The plane tickets would have cost much too much for just a couple of day's stay, though. So instead, we're going to visit a hot tub for an hour and pretend we are on vacation someplace warm!
I had a doctor's appointment on Friday (still no word on my test result to find out if I have mono)and Derek was sent home from day care on Monday due to what looked like an eye infection. I took him to the doctor, and she found that he had an ear infection, which had spread into his nose and eyes. He is now on medication to fix it. Doodah came and stayed with Derek yesterday while Brian and I were at work. I really appreciate Doodah-she even fixed us all some dinner. She even made brownies! She said Derek was very good all day, though he didn't take a nap. Later in the evening, Derek became hyperactive and began running around like a berserker. He really hurt my feelings, too, for the first time. (I'm sure it won't be the last.) He had a snowman made out of paper plates which he had put together in day care. It had paper streamers hanging from it. I told him not to run with it, as it dragged on the ground and he would step on the streamers, accidentally pulling them off. Well, when he realized that I didn't want him to pull the streamers off, he started doing it on purpose. I stopped him, and said, "Don't pull the streamers off."
Of course, when my back was turned, he immediately pulled all of them off.
Bad juju! I told him that I was very disappointed with his behavior, as I had told him not to do that. He started crying. He wanted me to be happy, but he refused to say he was sorry or to help momma fix the snowman.
When Daddy came home a few minutes later, Derek was still crying. I told Brian what had happened, and he said, "So what about the snowman? Who cares, it's just a paper snowman!"
I said, "That isn't the point. The point is that Derek did something that I told him not to do. He didn't listen to me. What if I told him not to cross the road because there was a car coming and he did it anyway?"
Brian said, "Derek, that was a bad thing you did. You have to do what Mommy tells you to!"
Anyway, we have been very sickly, with colds, flu, sinus problems etc. We are hoping it gets a bit less cold sometime soon.
