The Kentucky Blues
This move is turning mighty depressing mighty quickly. If it ever gets off the ground.
Brian is currently in an efficiency apartment in Georgetown, while I am in the Michigan house with Derek. We can't get a mortgage to buy a house in Georgetown until the Michigan house sells. According to our realtor, houses in our downtown area are not selling well right now at all. She wants this house to be picture-perfect before she lists it.
My original plan had been to move out everything, find a place to rent temporarily in Kentucky, have the Michigan house cleaned, and put it up for sale as a vacant house. However, we can't find anything inexpensive to rent in Kentucky that we can afford while still paying the mortgage on the Michigan house.
So I am totally stuck here in limbo.
In trying to keep our good credit rating, we will end up spending $40,000-$50,000 of my money at closing when we sell this house, if somebody wants to buy it.
Meanwhile, in the area we are trying to move TO, the economy is booming, and the FEI World Equestrian Games is coming to town in 2010. It is being held outside of Europe for the first time. This is Olympic-level sport, and people from Europe are buying up local houses to live in during the Games, with the intention of selling after the Games. So prices on housing are going up. The longer we wait until we can buy, the worse the situation will get.
What's really frustrating about this is that friends of ours who are relocating to the same area have had no problem finding a place to live, despite the fact that they have no money and really bad credit. They bought, via a lease-to-own agreement, a farm house that Brian and I had rejected as being too costly due to the fact that it needed foundation repairs and needed to be tapped into the city water supply (that was at the road, but not hooked up to the house.) Our realtor did not know that the fee for this had already been paid by the current owner of the property. But our friend's realtor did know this information. So they got the property that we probably would have bought had we known the information.
